Senses Fail - Let It Enfold You (Original / Leak)

Senses Fail is a band that needs no real introduction. Formed in 2001 and hailing from Ridgewood, New Jersey, Senses Fail started off playing my personal favorite style of post hardcore, the kind that mixes hardcore / emo / screamo / with like a hint of metalcore placed in there every now and then. On March 25, 2002 they released their REAL debut EP titled, "...Fallen Dreams". 3 more songs were later recorded on June 8-9th, 2002 and these new songs were combined with the original EP to create what most consider to be the debut Senses Fail release, "From the Depths of Dreams".

Shortly after, they got signed to Drive Thru Records which rereleased the "From the Depths of Dreams" EP with new artwork and a few added songs. Around 2003, Senses Fail began work on their debut LP, "Let It Enfold You" (2004). This LP is a perfect encapsulation of what Senses Fail was building up to this point, "Tie Her Down" is an all time favorite of mine personally. Which leads me to my post here... I just found out that apparently there was an "original" / "advance / "unmastered" version of this record that was originally recorded and ultimately leaked by the band themselves. This most noticeable difference in the "original" version is the screams that are much more prominent on this version - "Tie Her Down" & "Slow Dance" are quick examples that show these differences. I've seen conflicting reasons as to why a lot of the screaming was cut for the actual released version. One reason I've seen is that Drive Thru Records found screaming to be, "Out / Outdated" as well as that MCA was absorbed by Geffen Records which wasn't happy that the album wasn't really radio accessible and had a stand out single, thus causing the record to be shelved for 8 months. Due to this Senses Fail wrote, "Buried a Lie" & "Rum is for Drinking, Not Burning" in defiance. Likely it's a combination of these reasons as to why the version that was released is noticeably softer. Regardless it's really interesting that another version exists, and I definitely like it more and it makes me appreciate the record even more than I already did.

Senses Fail on this recording was:
Bass / Backing Vox - Mike Glita
Guitars - Dave Miller & Garrett Zablocki
Drums - Dan Trapp
Vox - Buddy Neilsen

ENDOR

ENDOR was a post-hardcore band from Temecula, California formed around sometime in the early 2000's. This band is most notable for their singer, Matt Barcalow. Matt, is the younger brother of Finch vocalist, Nate Barcalow. Even with a major cosign like that at the time, it appears this band never did much, only dropping one Self Titled EP through Relavare Records, a drastic difference to his older brother who was signed to major label, Geffen Records at the time. It appears Endor dissolved around 2006. I really wish this band released more music, it appears they had two other songs listed on their myspace not on the Self Titled EP called, "Original Daylight" & "Another Promise" but I couldn't find those songs / any other info. UPDATEEEEE!!!! (7/17)  I found 3 new demos!!!! I found "Another Promise" but not "Original Daylight" hmmmm... instead I found, "Last Song" and "Last Song (New Version)"... Ima hold onto those for rn thooo I might update this and add the DL links at somepoint ;) UPDATEEEEE!!! (7/18) I found two more demos - "Say Goodbye" & "Song About You". Still nothing about "Original Daylight" but shidddd I had no idea they had this much material.

Endor was:
Vocals - Matt Barcalow
Guitars - ?
Bass - ?
Drums - ?

Kinda crazy I legit found out about this like two hours before me typing this... and I literally found this by accident. I was listening to a demo of another band I will post on here with a sorta similar sound... *wink wink*. Since I found this I've been listening to it nonstop, it's quite obvious upon first listen that this band, specifically Matt was influenced highly by Glassjaw. The vocals can best be described as like Daryl Palumbo cleans mixed with Anthony Green Saosin era screams. I was sold as soon as I heard the singing / glassjaw influence obvi. But the instrumentation is also really interesting too. That's another way it reminds me of glassjaw - the music def has like an emo vibe but it's way more sophisticated and interesting than most run of the mill post hardcore bands from this era. I might go as far and say I like this more than Finch... maybe this is what I wanted Finch to be... either way this EP fuckin slapss. post hardcore in its truest sense.

40 SLS (40 Second Love Story)

40 SLS (40 Second Love Story) was a hardcore band from Boston / South Shore, Massachusetts formed around 2004. Their sound is very reminiscent of similar acts of the time such as Bury Your Dead, Black My Heart, Shere Khan and Until the End. Straight side to sides and spinkicks to lyrics about friends turning their back on you and brotherhood.

The real only lineup of 40 SLS I could find is:

Drums - Justin
Bass - Tony
Guitar - JD & Dave X
Vocals - Anthony

40 SLS released a demo in 2005 (presumably a myspace / online exclusive) and a full length in 2006, titled - Take It to the Streets through local Brockton label, Rock Vegas Records, which released other bands such as Shere Khan, Cut Throat, In Remembrance & A Loss for Words just to name a few. Apparently they have 2 or so new songs listed on their myspace as of 2013 but since myspace is fucked I can't find those songs. UPDATEEEEEE!!! Literally as I took a break from typing this post, one of my OG's sent me one of the myspace demos so ima post it too!! Apparently there are two other demos but he never grabbed those rippppp :(((

I also found it interesting that I've known the vocalist of this band for a phat minute. Anthony, the vocalist currently plays in a band called Cooked Alive and I only found out about this band a few months ago after watching a podcast they did and in the podcast they name dropped hella early 2000's south shore metalcore / hardcore bands such as: Avengeful Heart, Kilagin, Dyingforit and ultimately 40 SLS. Band is pretty dope imo, sum moshcore bands from this era tend to be a lil cheesy sometimes (in a good way tho) but I think 40 SLS strikes a good balance between pulling from bands like Bury Your Dead, Black My Heart and Until the End while also adding their own spin on it while still writing catchy songs. Definitely some parts you can tell what their pulling from but like isnt that the point tho...

As the Sun Sets - Each Individual Voice Is Dead In the Silence

As the Sun Sets was a metalcore / mathcore / grindcore / deathcore band from Providence, Rhode Island formed around 1999. The band is known for their abrasive form of metalcore that includes death metal vocals, technical riffs and crushing breakdowns. The band can be compared to contemporaries such as Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan and later acts such as The Number Twelve Looks Like You. The band played consistently in the New England Area until their eventual dissolvement on March 21, 2002. The following day vocalist Lex and drummer Jon changed the band name to Daughters. As the Sun Sets released 2 full length LP's, 2 EP's and 3 Demos in their lifetime.

          The Original Lineup Consisted of:

Alexis S.F. Marshall
Holland King
Jon Syverson
Joseph Krewko
Mike Cardoso

Some interesting information about this band is that original member Joe Krewko, joined Massachusetts metalcore band Blood Has Been Shed for a short time after leaving As the Sun Sets soon forming Bury Your Dead shortly after that which may have indicated a desire to go in a different direction from making technical mathcore to doing more simple mosh music. Joe, however did reunite with his former As the Sun Set mates to release a EP under the band name Crippler Crossface titled, Where Did We Put This Dead Horse We've Been Beating (2004).

here is the oldest footage of ATSS that exists

Overall Each Individual Voice Is Dead in the Silence is my favorite release by As the Sun Sets with 8949 being a close second. This LP is the only LP that really has pure metalcore / death(core) metal elements. The second LP, 7744 and the EP 8949 can be considered as a precursor to early Daughters as it shares much more in common with that musically than it does with As the Sun Sets initial debut record. Absolutely crushing debut album.

xBLACKMYHEARTx

Black My Heart was a straight edge hardcore band from Boston, Massachusetts formed in 2003, originally
consisting of:

  • Bass – Phillip Gauthier
  • Drums – James Moller
  • Guitar – Derek MabraTyler Joutras
  • Vocals – Justin Zwicker

This lineup released a four song demo in 2003 and quickly recorded their debut EP which was released in 2004 titled, The Fuck Hearts EP through Goodbye Blue Sky Records. This EP shares a very similar sound to their contemporaries at the time such as Bury Your Dead & On Broken Wings. This lineup dissolved around 2005 and Black My Heart reformed with Tyler Joutras being the only remaining original member on their 2006 LP, Before the Devil.

Some interesting information I found when researching this era of the band is that 3/5 of the original Black My Heart lineup has ties to the early 2000's Screamo / Grindcore / Metalcore scenes as Derek Mabra played in bands such as: Tears of Avarel, The:Enclitic & Shallows and Flats prior to joining Black My Heart. Tyler Joutras played in emoviolence band The Farewell Chapter prior to Black My Heart, releasing one demo and one EP with The Farewell Chapter. Drummer James Muller played in a band called Transistor Transistor directly after leaving Black My Heart.

I go back n forth whether I like this EP over the LP but if I had to choose I would prolly go with this EP since i find it really cool that this band has ties to the screamo / grindcore scene but has intention of playing simple ignorant mosh riffs a similar story to their contemporaries in Bury Your Dead. I'm also gonna link what's supposedly the OG Thick As Blood demo off the 2003 demo, I mean to me it def sounds different from xTheFuckHeartsx version but idk issa wobbler I might just be trippin.
